Crazy money and too much term given to aging veterans on the downside of their careers. Ladd will bring the hits though, and will be a crowd favorite. Just too much term, buyout city in 4-5 years... |

Ladd does have good hands around the net. He will bring more to the team game than the guys who left IF he can stay healthy. |

ITs no different than with any of the other 30-plus UFAs who signed these long deals. They are all regretted half way through. |

Yup, but I think there's another lockout before we start wondering if we should buy out Ladd. |

It's the price you have to pay. My understanding is it's a front loaded deal so they might be able to flip him as a cap mule after year 5. Even if they buy him out with 2 years left that's not so bad.
The question is can he contribute in his age 35-36 seasons? |

I read it's $1M/yr salary and declining bonuses each year:
Think it breaksdown something like $8M/$7M/$6M/$5M/$4M/$4M/$4M. |

Ladd is a heck of a player and leader, but he'll be washed up before that contract is done. Lucic is probably in the same boat for us. |

Anybody know the purpose of structuring the deal this way? Does it benefit the player or the team more? Just curious.... |

In case there's another lockout the player still gets paid |

I would think it's more financially attractive to trade him to another team toward the end of the contract, even tho the cap hit is still the same. |

Yeah these contracts can be useful as it let's a small market team make it above the salary cap floor without actually having to pay the full amount in salaries.

Great humanitarian, fan favorite, hits leader, gives it every shift, drops gloves when appropriate (good, but not great fighter), may be hard pressed to match his 10 goals this past season. |

You'll love him as a 4th liner. Great teammate & involved in the community.
If he concentrates on NOT trying to lead the league in hits, he might actually be able to repeat scoring 10 (or more) goals. Doesn't have bad instincts around the net....just doesn't get the opportunities and takes himself out of the play a little when he's pinballing off every guy who touches the puck.

Easier to trade the contract as well - budget team receives the benefit of the high cap hit but only pays a lower Tarif real $. I wonder who those types of teams will be in 5 years?? Las Vegas?
Edit: OK read on, same comments were made! |
